Balearic Islands

The Balearic archipelago is a part of Iberia, situated in the western Mediterranean Sea, near the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula.

The archipelago forms an autonomous community and a province of Spain, with Palma as the capital.
The current Statute of Autonomy declares the Balearic Islands as one nationality of Spain.

Geological context
The Balearic archipelago is a spur of the Betic Cordillera and thus part of the eponymous mountain system.

Geographical subdivision

The Balearic Islands are grouped in the eastern islands called the Gymnesian Islands - with the Majorcan island groups (Majorca, Cabrera) and the Minorcan island group (Minorca) - and the western islands called the Pityusic Islands also referred to as the Pityuses or informally as the Pine Islands.
